Disaster Services

If you are a victim of a disaster in Benton, Coos, Curry, Douglas, Lane Lincoln or Linn county, please contact our office at (541) 344-5244.

Each year, the American Red Cross responds immediately to more than 70,000 disasters, including house or apartment fires (the majority of disaster responses), hurricanes, floods, earthquakes, tornadoes, hazardous material spills, transportation accidents, explosions, and other natural and man-made disasters.

Locally, last year the Oregon Pacific Chapter’s trained disaster volunteers responded to 141 incidents and provided more than 400 individuals and families with free disaster relief services in Benton, Coos, Curry, Douglas, Lane Lincoln and Linn counties.

In the event of a disaster, the chapter works with the victims to identify their disaster-caused needs and help them develop an immediate plan of action.  We provide the means for these victims to pay for the basic necessities and help them return to a more normal living situation as soon as possible.

When Red Cross volunteers respond to a local emergency, they help families take their next step from crisis to stability.  Red Cross assistance can include:

  • Emergency shelter, food, and emotional counseling to address basic human needs affected or eliminated due to disasters.
  • Basic assistance such as groceries, new clothing, temporary housing, medicines, emergency home repairs, transportation and basic household items.
  • Help with long-term recovery when other resources, such as insurance benefits and government or other non-profit assistance, are not available or are inadequate to meet disaster-caused needs.
  • Information and referrals to help those affected obtain other resources.
  • Aide in emergency communication between disaster victims and family members located outside the disaster area.

“I wish to express my most sincere appreciation for your kind assistance the night of my house fire.  I did not know that volunteers from the Red Cross would get up in the middle of the night to help someone like me…Your volunteers Dick and Barbara were very kind to me.  I was so extremely stressed and would not have known where to turn if those kind people had not been there.” –Naomi Soules
